Rising input costs. Food with declining nutrient density. Land that isn't producing the way it should. CoLab Sciences works from the ground up — identifying what your soil actually needs and building the conditions for land that genuinely sustains itself, and the people on it.
5 signs your land is underperforming — and what to do about it. A plain-language guide for landholders, growers, and anyone who wants to understand what their soil is actually telling them.

Every recommendation is grounded in Soil Food Web analysis — the most rigorous ecological soil assessment available. Understanding what's in your soil is the first step toward land that produces real food, reliably, without depending on synthetic inputs.
We don't just test and hand over a report. We design and install food forests planned from the ground up, building a productive, resilient system that grows food you can trust, from soil that actually supports it.
Workshops and programs built around what landholders actually need to know — from understanding what's in their soil to growing food they can genuinely rely on. Practical, credentialled, grounded in real field experience.
Each service is a doorway. Most clients begin with a workshop or an assessment — and find their way deeper from there.
Nutrient-dense food starts with biologically active soil. Before you spend another dollar on inputs, know what's actually driving your soil's performance — and what's holding it back. In-house microscopy assessment, written report, clear next steps.
A food forest designed and installed from the ground up. Every planting decision is informed by what the science tells us about your land — building a productive, resilient system that grows food you can trust, from soil that actually supports it.
Hands-on workshops for home gardeners, farmers, agronomists, schools, and councils. The kind of session that changes how you see the ground under your feet.
Shanger Bala is a soil biology practitioner and educator focused on restoring living soil systems through practical, science-informed methods. With a background in medical science and over a decade of laboratory experience, his approach is grounded in understanding how biological systems function — then applying that knowledge directly to the land.
He works with growers, landholders, and landscape projects to improve soil structure, nutrient cycling, and microbial diversity using regenerative inputs and ecological principles. His work goes beyond inputs alone — focusing on building resilient, self-sustaining systems that reduce reliance on synthetic interventions.
By translating complex soil science into clear, actionable strategies, Shanger helps clients move from depleted soils to functioning ecosystems that support long-term productivity and health.
Trained as a NSW science teacher with a Graduate Diploma in Education (Science), Shanger brings the same rigour to his workshops and education programs as he does to his field work — making complex ecology accessible without dumbing it down.
Trained under Dr Elaine Ingham at the Soil Food Web School. Currently completing the Consultant Training Program — one of the most rigorous practitioner pathways in regenerative land management.
Active practice across food forest design, installation, and land management in SEQ, Northern Rivers, and Coffs Harbour. Grounded in permaculture design, living agroecology, and traditional ecological knowledge.
Most clients arrive through a single touchpoint and deepen over time. Here's the path from first contact to a thriving, monitored system.
A workshop, a referral, or a search that brought you here. You begin to see what's possible when land is managed ecologically.
A site visit and soil assessment establishes your baseline — what's living in the ground and what it means for where you want your land to go.
A food forest or land management plan designed for your site, your climate, and your goals — whether that's greater food self-sufficiency, reduced input costs, or a more ecologically resilient property.
Seasonal visits and ongoing soil assessment build a year-on-year record of measurable ecological improvement.
Every CoLab workshop is designed and delivered by facilitators with active field experience in agroecology and soil ecology. You leave with something you can act on that day — not just a handout.
